Health & Safety Systems

Workplace safety has become one of the major driving forces for workplace reform since 1992 when the Health and Safety in Employment Act became law. Over recent years due to a number of highly publicized fatal accidents plus the continuing high number of workplace injuries further reforms have become necessary.

December 2013 saw the introduction of a standalone agency (Work Safe NZ) to manage health and safety in New Zealand. This higher profile agency is the enforcement agency for health and safety and the point of contact for HSNO and ACC compliance.

August 2015 saw the passing of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 into law bringing NZ legislation in line with best in the world. This legislation moves closer to the risk management model and puts greater accountability on those running businesses to ensure the safety of those who work on or visit their workplaces.

Recently Standards NZ adopted ISO 45001: 2018 as the preferred standard for Health and Safety Management Systems.  This standard provides guidance for those wishing to build a world class health and safety management system or wishing to have an internationally recognised certifiable system.  Rangiriri Consultants specialise in creating bespoke health and safety management systems using this standard as the guide.

Importance of a robust system

There is an old saying "if it is not written down it didn't happen".A robust health and safety management system is like a good insurance policy in that it provides a level of protection when required.
More importantly a good health and safety management system provides a clear road map for ensuring the following bases are covered:
  • Visitor and Contractor Management
  • Hazard ID, risk assessment and mitigation
  • Training and competency
  • Plant and Machinery Management
  • Accident / Incident Management
  • Emergency preparedness
Each workplace is unique and needs to have a health and safety management system that reflects that uniqueness.

Rangiriri Consultants specialises in working with each workplace to produce a unique, relevant and appropriate health and safety management system.

Due Diligence

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 Officers (those with directional control of a company e.g. owners, board members, CEO's etc.) have a requirement to undertake due diligence to ensure the PCBU (company) is discharging it's duties under the act.

To help their clients with this onerous task Rangiriri Consultants has become a Premium Partner with Safe 365. Rangiriri Consultants, through Safe 365, can provide an online system that allows Officers to assess how each business unit or branch of the business is performing with respect to health and safety. Reports generated through Safe 365, allows officers to target programs and funds to achieve company health and safety goals more effectively.

Testimonial

Working through our Health and Safety requirements was a real headache, trying to stay compliant with all the new legislation that is coming into force is a nightmare for small businesses; Geoff from Rangiriri Consultants has made it a much easier, far more understandable process and a lot easier than we could have ever imagined. Implementation of the practical system has been worthwhile and what we have now is relevant to our industry as well as being easy for all of our staff to understand.

Geoff has a wealth of knowledge in this area and is able to explain why we need to have the systems in place in plain easy to understand English, without making us face a daunting uphill battle of never ending paperwork. He is assisting us through the quagmire of Health and Safety jargon, so much so that we are feeling that it is nowhere near as daunting as it once was.

I've been working with Geoff the last little while as a Business Advisor and have just completed my own Core Value Proposition process. I tell ya all... this guy is the real deal. He really knows his Health and Safety areas; Hazardous Substances, Manufacturing, Environmental safety and Quality safety (he audits this stuff). Geoff offers full accountability to his work so clients can truly relax.
The thing that impresses me most however is his willingness to work with a client to get the most practical outcomes.
